The Tavern was built in 1745 on East Chestnut Hill, Litchfield, and removed in 1923 to its present site on Toll Gate Hill, in Litchfield. It was reopened to the public in 1937, and meals are now served in the old tap room and dining rooms, and special parties are accommodated in the ballroom. The Tavern is furnished throughout with authentic American antiques of the period. Across the drive stands one of Connecticut's oldest schoolhouses, a little gambrel roof building, erected in 1789 in Berlin, Connecticut, and removed from that town in 1926 to Toll Gate Hill.
