El Colegio de San Jose was the first college in California established by W. E. P. Hartnell, January 1, 1834, with 15 students. One student was Pablo de la Guerra, member of a well known California family and brother of Teresa de la Guerra whom Hartnell married in 1825. He arrived in California in 1822 and applied for Mexican citizenship. James Jeffery established the first restaurant in Salinas in 1869 and in 1876 opened the Central Hotel, located at the present site of the Fox Theatre.
