Series 295 Born in 1600. Son of James 1st, whom he succeeded in 1625. After having tried to govern with the Parliament he needed, he successively ruled with the help of Strafford and Laud. Arbitrary taxes were then imposed and the Scottish presbyters were persecuted. Dissatisfaction as a general, he convened a Parliament that lasted only three weeks (1640), then another called Long Parliament, which impeached the ministers and executed Strafford (1641). Charles 1st then attempted a Coup d'etat, failed, fled, was defeated by Cromwell and delivered to Parliament by the Scots. Not wishing to make any concessions, he was condemned to death and executed (1649). He had married Henriette de France, daughter of Henry IV. |
