Son of Pepin the Short, born in 742. He first shared the kingdom with his brother Carloman (768-771), then this one being dead, he remained the only king. He defeated the Aquitaine, Lombards, Saxons, Arabs, etc. enlarged his kingdom considerably, and tried to restore the Roman Empire. He decided all questions, even religious, and published the so-called capitular laws. He had greater authority still when Pope Leo III crowned him Emperor of the Romans (800). He favored agriculture and commerce, and founded the Palatine School. He died in 814.
