Son of Joanne of Bourbon. Born in 1337. He was Regent during his father's captivity and succeeded him in 1364. He ended the war of the succession of Brittany by the treaty of Guerande (1365), he despoiled France of the Grand Companies by sending them to fight in Spain, and resumed to the English all the provinces they had conquered. He was helped in this by du Guesclin, Clisson, Boucicaut, etc. He died in 1380. He put the administration in order, tried to create a regular and disciplined army, fortified the royal power and fixed at 14 the majority of the kings of France.
