The Cenotaph, severe, grave, and beautiful,
designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, and erected in
Whitehall to the memory of the Glorious Dead who
fell in the Great War, was unveiled by H.M. King
George V. on November 11th, 1920.
How deeply it has touched the heart of the
Nation was immediately shown for within the first
week of the soul-stirring ceremony, upwards of
one million people passed by this noble monument in
silent homage to all those who have made the great
sacrifice. This simple pylon with the three broad
steps and the altar on its summit bears only the date
MCMXIV and the inscription “The Glorious Dead."
It stands for all time, a sacred record of the deep
veneration of a grateful people.
