PORTLAND OBSERVATORY. For more than
a century has this ancient wooden tower served as a watch-
tower from which ships at sea are sighted and reported by
signal flags to those below on the wharves and in the shipping
centers. Portland's old-established wireless telegraphy. It
serves its purpose to-day as it did long before the era of steam
vessels. It stands on the brow of Munjoy Hill and is open to
visitors. One of the landmarks of the city, picturesque and
useful. 149.
