VIEW OF CAIRO, EGYPT. Cairo, which will be visited
by Ex-president Roosevelt, is the capital and chief
metropolis of Egypt, situated in the delta of the Nile.
It is divided into several quarters, each quarter
devoted to a
separate nationality. It
is one of the great capitals of Islam, and is renowned
for its beautiful mosques, which are among the finest
specimens of Arabian architecture. Cairo has the old-
est university in the world, which gathers together
about 10,000 students who assemble from all regions
that pay homage to Mohammed. The population of
the city is about 600,000, chiefly Turks, and its history
dates from about the year 640.
