Additional Details:
Dr. King was the most popular Negro leader in America. He was president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. King first attracted national attention as president of the Montgomery, Ala. Improvement Association, where he led a successful boycott against segregated seating on city buses. He cooperated with the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights in Birmingham to end several phases of segregation there. (This picture shows Dr. King enjoying a joke by comedian Joey Adams during AGVA benefit for SCLS for March on Washington.)
