ALUM ROCK PARK is San Jose's 716 acre municipal
playground and was so named because of the huge rock in
the lower part of the canyon that contains a large per-
centage of alum. The major portion of the Park was
originally a part of the public lands to which San Jose be-
came entitled by virtue of its pueblo origin under the
Spanish regime. There are 22 active mineral springs in the
Park, a large natator'um, a plunge, many picnic tables, and
numerous hiking paths.
