Brief Sketch of Union Steam Fire Engine and Hose Co., No. 1 This company was organized Feb. 27, 1780, with Judge Philip Gloninger as President; Henry Kelker, Secretary; Gasper Snavely, Treasurer. They have a fine two-story brick house, the first floor of which is used for the apparatus and horses, while on the second floor is a parlor and meeting room. The steamer is a second class Amoskeag and has been in service 41 years. The hose wagon is one of the latest improved. In 1883 horses were introduced. At the firemen's parade in Harrisburg. July 4, 1987, the Union had 250 men in line. At the State Firemen's Tournament in Reading, in 1881, they had the largest number of equipped men in line - 348, and won prizes, viz; For largest number of men in line, a fine parade glass hose carriage; also, for the heaviest and tallest fireman. In May, 1880, they celebrated their 100th anniversary by the largest parade that was ever held in Lebanon, upwards of 30 fire companies being represented, the Union alone having 425 fully equipped men in line.
