TOMMY BURNS
Heavyweight champion of America for
three years, having the title from Marvin
Hart after the latter had gained it through
the retirement of Jim Jeffries, only to come
back five years later to meet Jack Johnson.
Burns was nothing more than a middle-,
weight, but he met the best and was
strong battler at that weight. He knocked
out B:ll Squires, the Australian champion,
Gunner Moir, the best in England at the
time, Jack Palmer, also of England, and Bill
Lang of Australia. His great battle was
with Jack Johnson, colored, whom he lost
the title to in Sydney, Australia, 'in 1908,
Burns getting $30,000 for his end, while
Johnson received $5,000. Burns was born
June 17, 1881, at Hanover, Canada.
