Back:
Henry Morton Stanley (actually James Row-
land) was born in 1841 and raised in a poor
house; went to New Orleans, where a mer-
chant by the name of Stanley adopted him;
Stanley served as volunteer in the Northern
army; after the war he became a reporter for
the New York Herald and travelled in Turkey
and Asia; in 1869 the Herald sent him to
Africa to look for Livingstone; in 1872 he
reached Livingstone in the heart of Africa
and went back to the Coast; in 1874 he again
left for Africa under the auspices of the New
York Herald and London Telegraph, and made
many important explorations; the geograph-
ical results that Stanley obtained place him
amongst the greatest of African explorers.
