Though the Summit Building, Radio a d TV Antennas and
the track of the Cog Railway leave Mt.Washingten easily
recognized from the west, much of the character fer whch
the mountain is noted is best viewed from the east in Pinkham
Notch. At 6,288 feet, the summit is usually free of snow only in
July and August. The Observatory has reco rded a tempera-
ture of -49°F, an average snowfall of 177 inches and the
world's highest natural wind velocity at 231 mph. The upper
mountain is permafrost to within a few feet of the surface.
