On January 24, 1968, while turning off the water to Sutter's Sawmill, James Marshall discovered gold in the American River at a place the Indians called Culloomah. On this hill above the river is this monument with Marshall pointing at the gold discovery site. Marshall died in abject poverty on August 10, 1885 and was buried on this hill-side. M.P.
