President Reagan and Nancy are thrilled by the immensity
and longevity of the Great Wall of China. After being served
a Chinese state dinner in the Great Hall, the Reagans
responded with a "reciprocal banquet" in the newly com
pleted Great Hall Hotel in Peking. Preparations were unbe
lievable, but the Chinese cleaned every plate of their
Thanksgiving dinner of turkey and all the trimmings.
Reagan's trip dramatized a yearning on both sides for bet
ter relations, despite the substantive differences that
separate them. Direct American invest ment in China is
rather meager. Our State Department decl ares that they
have a stable way to man age the differences between our
two countries without either side splitting the relationship
apart. Both Reagan and his hosts achieved a good balance
between hopefulness and clear-sighted fut uring. The trip
was well worth making. April 28, 1984
