Constructed in 1855-56, by James Sperry and John Perry, was opened Aug. 20, 1856. Mining was chief interest of the residents, but Sperry and Perry undoubtedly had in mind serving visitors from all parts of the world who were visiting the Calaveras Grove of Big Trees. Some famous visitors were: Mark Twain, Henry Ward Beecher, Horatio Alger, Jr., Sir Thomas Lipton, "Black Bart," Ulysses Grant.
