Constructed in 1855-56, by James Sperry and John
Perry, was opened Aug. 20, 1856. Mining was ch ief
interest of the residents, but Sperry and Perry un-
doubtedly had in mind serving visito rs from all
parts of the world who were visiting the Calave ras
Grove of Big Trees. Some famous visitors were:
Mark Twain, Henry Ward Beecher, Horatio Alger, Jr.
Sir Thomas Lipton, "Black Bart, Ulysses Grant.
