Georgetown, first named Growlersburg from the big nuggets which growled in the miners' pans, was settles in 1849. After the original town, south of here was swept by three fires, townsmen laid out the present site in 1856. Through the years nearby canyons and gulches have yielded millions in gold. Hundreds of men are now employed in the forests and mills of this area. Present day Georgetown is the largest center on the Georgetown Divide and is the gateway to some of the finest fishing and hunting in California.
