Original Congregational Church
Grass Valley, California
This pioneer church was built by
the contributions of miners and others
in 1853 and dedicated Oct. 16 of that
year by Rev. J. G. Hale, Pastor.
A “Womans Temperance Union”
was organized in this church, March
25, 1874; Mrs. A. B. Dibble, President,
Mrs. D. J. Spencer, Sec'y., adopting
for its motto "In God We Trust” and
instituting the same methods of work
still in use. After the organization of
the National Woman's Christian Tem-
perance Union its name and constitu-
tion were amended to conform to the
National Union.
This is believed to be the first W.
C. T. U. organized.
