CALIFOR NIA GREETINGS
AGE
The Jackass Mail . . . .
(Music "The Freighter").
Take a quart of strong likker, to use as a kicker,
Or more if you're known to be frail.
Get a pad for your setter, two would be better,
For you're takin' the Jackass Mail.
Chorus: Git and git ap, keep your gun on your lap,
up
If you're ridin' that hell-bound trail;
The horses are poundin', the Injuns ahoundin
The stage of the Jackass Mail.
Get a gun with a bore sir, a big forty-four sir,
And practice 'til you'll never
Or when arrows start flyin', you'll find yourself dyin'
"Long the route of the Jackass Mail.
Fail;
Bid your gal a goodbye sir, but don't tell her why sir,
You're lookin' so scairt and so pale;
She'll start grievin', if you tell her you're leavin'
To ride on the Jackass Mail.
Tell your poor failin' Mammy, your old ailin' Pappy
Tó dry up their tears and not wail;
Saint Peter'll greet 'em and that's where you'll meet 'em
After ridin' the Jackass Mail.
Once the horses start lopin', there's no use in hopin'
Or askin' the Lord to prevail;
No need in your frettin', you've asked and you're gettin',
A ride on the Jackass Mail.

SANOLO CAUCANIA
In 1857 the official name of the "Jackass Mail" was
San Antonio and San Diego Stage Line. Who nick-
named it is pure conjecture but legends are numerous.
On one occasion, when the stage limped into Vallecitos
station bristling with arrows, horses a'lather, passengers jittery
and driver hatless, a wag sized pencil and paper to produce the
first verses of "The Jackass Mail." Fitted to song, it grew like a
snowball. Reproduced here are only a few of the milder stanzas,
The music "Pancho Vallejo" is still available.
