In 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino sailed into this
bay and named it Monterey. 168 years later
the Padres founded the second of the Cali-
fornia Missions here. Under the Spanish,
Mexican and American flags, Monterey was
the capital of old California most of the time
between 1775 and 1846. Today much of the
early California atmosphere still prevails in
this enchanting town which has carefully
preserved its historical buildings and land-
marks.
