Mark Twain started his newspaper and writing career
in this building,starting to work for Editor Joe Goodman
in 1862. His career in Virginia City was brought to an
abrupt end in 1867, when he was advised rather vehe-
mently by the citizens to leave town or else. This was
the result of his celebrated “ Dutch Nick Massacre"
story (pure fabrication ) which was copied by most
other U.S. Newspapers as truth. The newspaper is be- M
ing published at present by Lucius Beebe and Charles E
Clegg, present day exponents of the art of news report-
ing in the old fashioned fearless manner. The Mark 0
Twain Museum in basement holds all the treasures of
the almost forgotten Hey Day of handprinted news.
