STATE HISTORICAL MONUMENT ·
ON JANUARY 24, 1848, GOLD WAS DISCOVERED IN THE TAIL-
RACE OF SUTTER'S SAWMILL BY JAMES W. MARSHALL .
THIS DISCOVERY PRECIPITATED THE FAMOUS GOLD RUSH
AND THE INFLUX OF "FORTY-NINERS" INTO CALIFORNIA.
SUTTER'S MILL STOOD ON THE RIVER BANK ABOUT
500 FEET NORTHEAST OF THIS POINT; THE SITE MAY BE
REACHED BY ANY OF THE MARKED TRAILS WHICH START
FROM THIS PARKING AREA.

VISIT THE MUSEUM, ACROSS THE HIGHWAY.
JAMES W. MARSHALL IS BURIED AT THE MARSHALL MONUMENT
WHICH STANDS ON THE HILL TO THE SOUTHWEST AND
IS VISIBLE FROM THIS POINT. IT IS ALSO IN THE STATE
PARK SYSTEM. IT MAY BE REACHED BY ROAD LEAVING
THE HIGHWAY SOUTHEAST OF COLOMA.
