Frederic francois Chopin.
“THE ARIEL OF THE PIANOFORTE.” Born at
Zelazowa, Wola, Poland, his father being a
Frenchman, and his mother a Polish lady. He was a
wild boy, full of fun, yet devoted to music. At nine
he played and improvised in public so well as to be
called "the new Mozart." He always composed, and
studied much of Bach. .
At nineteen he went to Paris, which he made his
home. He was welcomed by Schumann, Tausig and
Liszt, as a genius, and became very popular as a
teacher. He played very little in public, being shy
and nervous, but much for his circle of friends.
He was very patriotic and some of his pieces are
pictures of Polish life and characteristics. He was
not strong physically, and finally fell a prey to con-
sumption. He died in Paris.
He was a wonderful player, and introduced a new
style; he is said to be the greatest composer of purely
piano music. His “preludes” and “etudes," ma-
zurkas, polonaises, ballades, scherzos, waltzes, and
nocturnes are familiar compositions.
