El Garces Hotel is named after Francisco
Garces, a pioneer Spanish priest and Franciscan
friar who traveled extensively in Arizona and Cali-
fornia in the years 1768-81 as a missionary to the
various Indian tribes. He was resident minister at
the Mission San Xavier. Later he made several
expeditions to discover a means of communication
between the widely separated settlements of New
Mexico and California.
The architecture of the hotel is colonial. It
is surrounded by wide verandas, forming an ideal
promenade. Four times around the building is a
mile walk.
