The Essential Monthly Magazine for Every One Who Lives in the Country. 52nd Year - 1,4000,000 This Month. When Congress declared the independence of the United States, the Liberty Bell pealed in loud tones the decision of that body. The bell was originally cast in England. It was cracked in 1835 and the picture shows the bolts which keep the bell from cracking further. It has been silent since 1843. The Farm Journal Building is on Washington Square, adjoining Independence Square, where the Liberty Bell is housed in Independence Hall.
