The California barracuda is dif-
ferent in form and size from the
great barracuda of tropical waters.
There are at least fifteen species of barracuda dis-
tributed in all the warm seas of the world, but
S. argentea is the only one that is actually fished
because of its commercial value. It is the most
important fish of the fresh fish markets in Southern
California and in 1928 ranked seventh among the
fishes of the state. The annual catch
is about 414 million pounds, and the
maximum weight is about 12 pounds. It
is a good game fish, much sought after by anglers.
