Francis Bacon, Lord Verulam, and Viscount St.
Albans, often wrongly styled Lord Bacon, was born at
York House, in the Strand, London, January 22nd,
1561. "He was the practical creator of scientific in-
duction, and although of succeeding scientific experi-
mentalists many may have been unconscious of their
indebtedness to him, their chief results are due to
their adoption of his logical method.” Bacon's literary
work occupied him the greater part of his life, and
as a writer of English prose he is seen to best ad-
vantage in his Essays. As a scientific and literary
writer few have been greater than he. As a politician
and public man he was a failure. He died April 9th,
1626.
