This statue, of colored clay, represents more than
two years of painstaking work by James Malla-
mace, sculptor, of San Jose, California.
Mallamace has reproduced America's great na-
tional statue of Liberty, with the eagle guarding
her against all comers—a picture of President
Roosevelt and small figures of Uncle Sam, General
MacArthur and a Red Cross nurse at her feet.
The statue is illuminated with 220 colored lights
and equipped with a radio-phonograph.
The central theme is that Liberty, guarded as
she is, needs the further support of all citizens.
Those on the home front can render no greater
service than in buying bonds and stamps to provide
our fighting men with adequate equipment.
Mallamace, who is of Italian descent, has never
taken a single lesson in art, and his principal tools
are an ordinary paring knife,
knife, a teaspoon and a
fingernail file.
