At about 4:35 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 1909, special train No. 5, westbound to Spokane with three cars, crashed head-on with the regular train No. 20, eastbound with four cars, at the La Crosse siding (now Gibbs) approximately two miles northwest of Coeur d’Alene.
