Raton Tunnel, on the Santa Fe Between Trinidad and Raton, N.M.
Additional Details:
Highest point, altitude 7,622 feet. The tunnel at Raton Pass is 15 miles beyond Trinidad. The track follows the Old Santa Fe Trail, which is one of the oldest human pathways found on this continent. The grade up the pass is remarkably steep; two powerful mountain engines are required to haul the train on the upward climb. From the car window one may see an endless variety of mountain views. The Santa Fe has recently completed a second tunnel considerably below the original tunnel. Detroit Publishing Co. |
