BY THE LAKE.
Where Lake Sebago's myriad sun-kissed wavelets
Glitter, besparkling far-famed Jordan's Bay,
Mingling their murmur with the pines' low anthem
That weaves its charm in shore groves, day by day,
In years agone the war-cry of the red man
Sounded and echoed 'long the wooded shore;
And o'er the waves by deftest guidance hastened
Their birchen vessels - gone forevermore.
Today the glistening wavelets, still obeying
The touch of gentle west-winds, dance and glow,
Today the laughing waters, bright, foam-crested,
In storm-time o'er the pebbly beaches flow.
But where the wooded hillside "gloomed in shadows"
Of torests unprofaned by woodman's stroke,
Where from the vine-clad cliff-tops and the meadows
Issued the wigwam's slowly curling smoke;
Broad fields and flower-flecked intervales, abounding
In beauty of the husbandman's reward,
Stretch from the shore-line to the distant mountain,
A wondrous landscape of sunlight and sward.
And happiest homes, made beautiful, are dotted
Along the farmlands and the village street,
Elm shaded, for its peacefulness proverbial,
With gladsomeness the town seems e'er replete.

And this is Raymond, olden, lovely, restful,
Crowned with glad memories, hallowed day by day,
Content beside the beautiful Sebago,
Which lends its rarest charms to Jordan's Bay.
