When this Little Store Started
in 1855
-the ladies in hoopskirts, and gentlemen in
tall hats and long coats, traveled in omnibu-
ses, stage coaches and one-horse chaise.
The first horse car came about a year later,
railroad lines were few and far between.
The telephone was unheard of and telegraphy
little used. The principal stree ts were lighted
with gas and oil lamps But what a difference
59 years has made on this old landmark.
The building shown on the other side, the
Gilchrist's of to-day, well illustrates the many
new innovations and modern methods that
have been adopted since your grandparents did
