The City by the Western Gate,
The Mecca of the Golden State;
Beloved,by many men afar
Who fearful, watched her falling Star.
But Phoenix-like she rose again;
From out the havoc that was wrought
The Spirit of the West was caught,
And underneath the Smiling Skies
Renewed her olden hopes and ties.
