ADLAI EWING STEVENSON, Governor of Illinois and Demo-
cratic nominee for President of the United States, was born
in Los Angeles on February 5, 1900. He grew to manhood in
what he has called "the heartland of the nation''on the
prairies of lilinois. Stevenson grew up in a tradition of pub-
lic service. His great-grandfather, Jesse W. Fell, was an Ili
nois pioneer, the first man to propose Abraham Lincoln for
President. Adlai E. Stevenson, his paternal grand father and
namesake, was Vice President of the United States during
the second Democratic administration of Grover Cleveland.
After a successful career in the practice of law, Adlai be-
came assistant to Secretary of Navy Knox in 1941; in 1943
he lead the first economic mission into Europe and in 1944
served on an Air Force Mission into Europe. He assisted in
the formation of the UN organization and headed the Ameri-
can Delegation to the Preparatory Commission of the UN in
London. Served as an American Delegate to the UN Assem-
blies in 1946 and 1947. Elected Governor of Illinois in 1948
by the largest majority in the State's history.
