Additional Details:
Sandra Day O'Connor, a conservative former Arizona judge becomes an associate justice of the Supreme Court, the first woman in US history to bear that title. O'Conner, the youngest member, is the 102nd justice and first appointment to the court by President Reagan. Elected as the first female member in the Supreme Court's 191 years, O'Connor received a vote of 99 to 0 and proceeded to be inducted in the same robe as she wore while on the Arizona bench. "I'll buy a new one eventually," she promised. "The do get old, you know." September 25, 1981.
