Arizona judge becomes an associate justice of
the Supreme Court, the first woman in U.S.
history to bear that title. O'Connor, the youngest
member, is the 102nd justice and first appoint-
ment to the court by President Reagan. Elected
as the first female member in the Supreme
Court's 191 years, O'Connor received a vote of
99 to 0 and proceed ed to be inducted in the
same robe she wore wh ile on the Arizona bench.
"Il buy a new one eventually,'" she promised.
