COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of the Indiana
Territory,this stamp shows a picture of the first
Capitol, with an oval portrait of William Henry Harr
ison,its lst Governor. This territory includ ed an area
which is now Indiana,Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin,
as well as parts of Minnesota and Ohio.
WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON
County,Virginia in 1773. His father Benjamin Harrison
was one of the signers of the Dečlaration of Independence
After his fathers death, William joined the Army which
Wayne was leading against the Northweetern Indians,and
showed great gallantry in battle. In 1798 he left the
Army and represented the Northwest Territory as a Dele-
gate in Congress. When the Indiana Territory was formed
in 1800 he was appointed Governor. Harrison led many
successful attacks with the Indians and during the War
of 1812. In 1824 he be came a United States Senator. In
1836 he was defeated in a Presidental race agains Van
Buren, but defeated him four years later to become the
ninth Presid ent of the United States
was born in Charles City
