THE SWALLOWS RETURN TO CAPISTRANO
3
This beauti ful story is acted out each year in
the Mission as the Swall ows wing their way to
San Juan Capistrano, California on March 19,
St. Joseph's Day
It is fitting that this miracle shou Id take place
on the Holy Ground sanctified by the Mission
Founder, Fra. Junipero Serra, who established
the Mission on Nov. 1, 1776, and was himself
of the Order of St. Francis, the beloved patron
of the birds and animals.
As promptly as the swallows arrive, they depart
on Oct. 23, St. John's Day and take with them
the young birds they have raised in the mud
nests attached to the Mission ruins.
Where the swallows go is unknown, since no
one has ever success fully traced one of these
birds, yet swallows have been seen hundreds of
miles at sea resting on the water, carrying a
twig in each tiny beak for ballast.
Regardless of their dest ination, their faith fu l
return is regarded by many as a miracle to re-
mind man to renew his faith in His Creator.
