This beautiful story is acted out each year in the Mission as the Swallows wing their way to San Juan Capistrano, California on March 19, St. Joseph's Day. It is fitting that this miracle should take place on its Holy Ground sanctified by the Mission Founder, Fra. Junipero Serra, who established the Mission on Nov. 1, 1776, and was himself of the Order of St. Francis, the beloved patron of the birds and animals. As promptly as the swallows arrive, they depart on Oct. 23, St. John's Day and take with them the young burds they have raised in the mud nests attached to the Mission ruins. Where the swallows go is unknown, since no one has ever successfully traced one of these birds, yet swallows have been seen hundreds of miles at sea resting on the water, carryign a twig in each tiny beak for ballast. Regardless of their destination, their faithful return is regarded by many as a miracle to remind man to renew their faith in His Creator.
