Kaweah was founded in 1891 by former members of
the International Workingmen's Association who had
in 1885 made plans for a socialistic community. Their
troubles were great not only with their own colony
but also the army when it was found 55 claims had
been filed in one day for land in the area of the
Sequoias. Tharp, a farmer from Three Rivers, was
the first white man to visit the back country and was
met by the Yokut Indians. They liked him and he
liked them. He said he never heard of theft or mur-
der among them, but the settlers who followed Tharp
their way of life.. . M.P.
