In September 1979 a series of stamps was issued commemorating the
British police at their most benign. On 23 April 1979, 342 people were
arrested and charged in Southall for being on the streets in protest against
fascism. Many were beaten; one man was murdered.
Despite the long drawn out police investigation and the farcical coroner's
verdict of ‘misadventure', the Blair Peach Campaign goes on. Even the
inquest jury's riders to the verdict acknowledged that Blair Peach was
killed by a police officer. Commander Cass's internal report must be made
public. A public enquiry into the events at Southall should be held, and the
SPG disbanded.
