This once famous mining town is today a small aggregation of old buildings and shacks clustered below the great mill and mines that set on Bodie Bluff. The mineral belt extends for over 2 1/2 miles in the bluff above the town. It is said that over $80,000,000 was taken out of the mines. Wm. S. Bodie, after whom the town was named, found gold here in 1859. Gold was discovered in the Mono region in 1852 when the Mono trail was blazed, but in 1864 Sonora Pass Wagon road was open and a great amount of the travel used this new road. Most of the town was destroyed by the fire of June 24, 1932. |
