Additional Details:
"Wide Awake" was the gift of the boys and girls of Seattle, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and their to the city's large zoological collection at Woodland Park. The children, in a seven weeks campaign, raised $3,122.82 with over 24,000 persons contributing. "Wide Awake" was eight years old when purchased in May, 1921, for $3,500. She was brought from India when three years old, is well trained, as gentle as a kitten and never as happy as when with children. She is the youngest elephant in any zoological park in the United States and, with one exception, the only elephant in any park west of the Mississippi River. When she reaches maturity she should be about nine feet high.
