MIDSHIPMAN. The student at the U. S. Naval Academy, formerly known
as a cadet, is now designated a Midshipman. He is in effect an officer of
the Navy in that he receives pay from the day he takes up his training.
Midshipmen receive $600 a year during the four years they are pursuing
their studies at Annapolis, and $1,400 a year during the two years when
they are rounding out the instruction period by service on cruising war-
ships. When afloat, Midshipmen perform such work as watch and division
duty, both in the engine room and on deck, but are not detailed for duty
on the personal staff of a flag officer or as aid to the captain of the ship.
The full dress uniform (as seen in this picture) is worn on state occasions,
such as the visits of American and foreign officials to the U. S. Naval
Academy, the inauguration of the President, etc:
