| The Washington Monument, on the banks of the Potomac River, is an imposing marble shaft 555 feet in height. The corner stone was laid in 1848 and the finished monument was dedicated in 1885. It is the highest masonary work in the world and cost $1,300,000. Forty states and numerous foreign countries contributed memorial stones for the shaft. |
