Amsterdam is situated in the province of North
Holland where the streets are nothing else but a cost-
Iy system of canals and sluices. The entire city is
surrounded by embankments to protect it from the en-
croachment of the Zuyder Zee. The houses are built
on piles and, owing to this, the inhabitants are com-
pelled to use the water ways for the disposal of sewage.
