At noon on February 20, 1915, the
Panama-Pacific International Exposi-
tion was officially opened by Secretary
of the Interior Lane, as personal repre-
sentative of the President. At the
same time President Wilson, with the
other members of his cabinet, gathered
at the White House, Washington, held
down the key of a gold telegraph in-
strument, forming a connection direct
to the grounds of the Exposition in San
Francisco, and set in motion the ma-
chinery of the greatest Exposition the
world has ever seen. The attendance
on the opening day of over 250,000
broke all records.
