Additional Details:
California's largest mining camp where some $67,000,000 in ore was taken out of the hills. This camp followed on the heel of the great find near Virginia City, Nevada. Mining stopped with the low price of silver, in fact Calico mines were never worked out. Little known is that Borax was located near Calico and with the short haul to the railroad at Dagget soon closed the Harmony and Amargosa works in Death Valley. Ed Stiles was given the job to operate the 20 Mule team to haul the Borate through the winding canyons. It was after Borax Smith, with British Capital spent $3,000,000 to build the Tonopah & Tidewater that the Borax workings left the Calico area and went back to Death Valley.
