AN "OIL ISLAND"-LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA
Some distance offshore, a perimeter of rocks quarried
from Catalina Island is piled up on the ocean floor until
it rises high above the waves. Sand and silt are dredged
in to fill the area within the rocky outline. Then, oil wells
are drilled, to tap pools of black gold below.
