Death Valley, despite its name, is a valley of fun-
filled life, especially during the 49er's encampment
held each year in November. Among activities are the
famous burro flapjack races, a desert art show, com-
munity singing, naturalists' talks, conducted tours,
fiddlers' contest, and dancing under the stars. These
and the other events are sponsored by the Death
Valley '49ers, a non-profit, public-spirited group in-
terested in preserving and sharing the beauty of
Death Valley.
