In a bowl-shaped valley at the southern base of the Santa
Lucia Mountains in San Luis Obispo, county seat of San
Luis Obispo County. The town grew up around the MISSION
SAN LUIS OBISPO De TOLOSA, fifth of the chain established
Sept. 1, 1772. The friars of the mission were the first to
experiment with the making of tiles, which proved so
successful that they became the fashion after 1784 for
